Pinot Nero - Terre Siciliane I.G.T. - Calabretta
The Calabretta winery tradition is rooted on Mount Etna. Already in the early 1900s they were producing and exporting large quantities of wine. At the same time, the town of Passopisciaro arose to accommodate the many peasants who were arriving en masse looking for work. This lead to the emergence of many small producers. Today, a century later, Etna is renowned for its wines of character and tradition. In 1997, Massimo & Massimiliano Calabretta built a new winery and started to bottle and sell the Calabretta wines all over the world.
Pinot Noir - the enfant terrible of world viticulture has returned to Mount Etna after the splendor of the 1800s. Calabretta planted the Pinot Nero vines a few years ago in a vineyard at over 900 m a.s.l. where the temperature variations between day and night even exceed 20°C, the wind beats undaunted and the sun warms and illuminates the leaves. The production of grapes per plant is extremely low and the fermentation is carefully and specifically studied to better develop the organoleptic qualities of this wonderful grape.
The grapes were manually harvested and carefully sorted. They ferment spontaneously and macerate for about five days in stainless steel tanks. The wine slowly refine in used barriques, for a variable period of time after which it is bottled without clarification or filtration. The very low yields make the perfumes very present in this wine truly intense and enveloping.
